Personal Mission Statement: With a focus on the whole student, it is my mission to build character, create community, promote scholarship, and ignite imagination through the vehicle of music.
About me: I teach A Cappella Chorus, Amici Chorus, Senior High Orchestra, Junior High Orchestra, and Silver Strings. Additionally, I direct the GACS Men’s Literary Quartet, GACS Women’s Literary Trio, Jazz Choir, Cantate, the GACS String Quartet, the GACS Piano Trio, other various small ensembles, Spartan Spectacular, the Spartan Review, and I am the musical director for the Junior High and Senior High musicals. But, don’t worry . . . I’m used to the hectic schedule. Read on . . .
As a graduate of Dickinson High School in North Dakota, I am still busy defrosting. It was there that I discovered my love of music as a member of the Jazz Band, Concert Band, Marching Band, Jazz Choir and Concert Choir. I stayed active as the drum major for the Marching Band, first chair saxophonist for the concert band, and the choir president, and I was the recipient of both the National High School Choral Award and the Louis Armstrong Jazz Award. As a National Merit Scholar, I went on to be awarded the prestigious Presidential Scholarship to attend the University of Mississippi.
While at the University of Mississippi, I participated in the Concert Singers, Women’s Glee, Opera Theatre, the Mississippi Early Music Ensemble, and the Grammy-nominated University of Mississippi Gospel Choir in addition to being a member of the Honors College. As a member of the Concert Singers, I traveled throughout Italy, Eastern Europe, England and France competing in and winning international choral competitions. As a soloist, I won the Worcestershire International Music Festival competition for art song in Worcestershire, England, was selected to sing at Notre Dame, and invited to perform at commencement. Though my studies focused on vocal performance, I was privileged to have studied also under Laurdella Foulkes-Levy, Kodaly specialist and graduate of the Liszt Institute. Additionally, my studies included orchestration under Dr. Kevin Swinden and conducting. I went on to attend Georgia State University, where I premiered the role of Redgold in "The Bronzed Mirror," and the song cycle based on the poetry of Dorothy Parker, "Enough Rope for Dorothy." I graduated with my Masters in 2006. Because learning never stops, I continued pursuing my education at the American Institute of Musical Studies in Graz, Austria, where I studied with the renowned conductor, Edoardo Mueller. I am currently continuing my studies in music education and voice performance with Elizabeth Nohe Colson, who was the 2005 Classical Singer National Teacher of the Year and assistant to the late Robert Shaw.
Outside of any musical activities, I have a life in Bethlehem, Georgia, with my husband of seven years, Ken Montgomery. There, I tend an overgrown garden and harass my neighbors with my incessant practicing (which they can hear inside their homes, I’m sorry to say). I am a fabulous cook, with the exception of frosted brownies, which for some reason, when I make them, always turn into goo. My favorite poets are Elizabeth Barrett Browning, Christina Rossetti, Ogden Nash, and William Ernest Henley. Therefore, having God, love, music, food, and poetry, my life and my bio are complete.
